For as long as I’ve had this blog, I’ve never talked much about my age. Because I’m a young freelancer, I was always nervous that it would deter potential clients or scare people away simply because I don’t have ten years of experience under my belt. But the thing is, it’s about time I get out of my head on this one. I’m here. I’m doing what I love. And it’s working just fine. So why worry about a silly number?? I will be turning 24 years old tomorrow and I’ve had a running list of things I’d like to accomplish this year, so I thought I’d publish it! Plus, I’d like to share more about all of these as I cross them off the list. So, here it goes … my list of twenty four things to do before I turn twenty five.

01. travel to europe.
02. cook dinner the majority of the week.
03. go skiing.
04. pay off student loans.

Ooh girl, you’ve already paid off your loans? That’s amazing! These are all really great things. I can’t wait to see the ebook or ecourse you write! :)

  2. Kate says:

I learned to knit in high school, but this video is great for beginners, and super super simple. hope it helps you mark one thing off your list!

  3. Chloe Moon says:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! I’ve noticed you already crossed off pay off student loans! Good for you!! =) I hope you have a great day tomorrow!

  4. Anna Z says:

Awesome, awesome. That photo of you is so pretty.

Happy Birthday! I love your blog.

  5. Jen Serafini says:

Happy Birthday Bre! Look forward to seeing you accomplish all of these!

  6. I hope you have a great birthday! Being a more active local designer is on my list. Congrats on paying off your student loans! :)

  7. These are all great things for turning 24! Happy Birthday!

  8. Happy birthday =)
You shouldn’t be afraid to tell your age. The internet is full of young talented people that prove that age doesn’t matter. I’ve been amazed by photos I come across and then realize they’d been shot by 15 years olds, if you know what I mean!
    xoxo, Eleni

  9. Andrea says:

Hey Bre, Happy Birthday!!! I’ve gotta say I am BEYOND jealous you can cross off “pay student loans”! Congratulations though that’s huge! Hoping you have an awesome birthday and that all is well!

  10. Alyssa says:

Oooh you live in Minneapolis, my great true love! I absolutely adored running around the lake–and miss it more than ever now that I live in Dallas, where there are no lakes for miles around. Happy Birthday, sweet girl!

  11. Jamy says:

Happy Birthday Bre! Hope it’s wonderful.
Love the 24 before 25. If you ever are in Colorado and want to ski—we’ll meet you up there :)

p.s. age is a number that does not ever represent how you feel inside. besides, you’re talent and drive transcends others who may have that “so called experience” under their belt. :)

  12. Do-Hee Kim says:

Thanks for sharing this & Happy early birthday.
Totally agree with you being hesitant sharing one’s age in the design industry where many job list “strict” requirements. But I think your talent and passion speak for themselves.

Best wishes for your coming year.
    You will achieve amazing things.

  13. ali says:

i am in the same boat! i’m turning 23 next week and i’m always hesitant to tell people how old i am, even though i have great clients and a great job. it doesn’t change that we are good designers (and maybe being young makes us that way!) … happy birthday!

  14. morgan says:

this is a fantastic picture of you! happy bday! great list that I think you can totally achieve in the next year :)

  15. Samantha says:

I love your list :) I am so loving your design style as I mentioned on a comment on Facebook. Good luck to accomplish all of them and happy birthday! :)

  16. Helena says:

    Happy Birthday, Bre! :)
Your list really inspires me to start one as well – I’m thinking of things to do before my birthday in April, (4 goals – one for each month), I’m hoping that will challenge and push me enough to accomplish it. I’m with you on the ‘being patient’ one!
So great that you paid off your student loan already! Can I ask – when did you finish uni? So how long did it take you to pay it off?
Good luck with your list, and have a lovely day tomorrow!
    Helena xx

    • bre says:

Thank you, Helena! I graduated from undergrad in 2011 and started paying off my loans one year ago. Most people take longer to pay them off, but I had some good savings and didn’t want to pay more interest than I needed to!

  17. Lauren says:

    Happy birthday!

  18. Naomi says:

Love the list! Also, I think that people will want to work with you because of who you are and the amazing work you produce. The few people who do mind – I’ve met some of them when I was starting out as a consultant at 23 – usually aren’t a good fit in the first place. So I’m happy you dared to just say it!
    Have a lovely birthday tomorrow!

  19. Amy says:

Happy birthday! My 24th birthday is next week, but I won’t be getting my graphic design degree for another couple of years. You are such an inspiration! :)

  20. Xanthe says:

Happy Birthday!… age is just a number, I’m very far away from being 24 now, but I tell you I still feel like it some days…
I love making birthday lists, and I tell you what, they really do focus you into making things happen… I wrote one last year in March when turning 38 and I reckon I’ve completed 3/4 of it… it’s powerful stuff.
I’m creating my third ecourse at the moment, and I love it… it’s a wonderful way to make the world so much smaller, with students all over the globe. If you manage number 1… I’m in London and can give you some tips.
    Have a great weekend :)

  21. Angela says:

you deserve a big, fat serving of delicious birthday cake! Have a great one and thanks again for the daily inspiration!

  22. Amy says:

hope you have a wonderful birthday sweetheart…enjoy your youth and never let what anyone else thinks hold you back! and kudos on paying off the student loans…that’s that capricorn prudence kicking in! ;)

  23. anto says:

Happy Birthday Bre! I wish you a great one. Congratulations on paying off your student loans. That’s fantastic!
I love number 16 ;) I learned to knit thanks to my grams while I was in middle school and it’s a hobby that has stuck with me ever since. I hope you enjoy it very much!

  24. Renee says:

Wow, I believe we share the same birthday! I’ll be 30 tomorrow (the 19th) and I really feel you on getting some things crossed off before your gain another year. I feel like I’ve wasted so much of my life doing what people told me was necessary, not what I really enjoyed or felt would enrich my life. I love your list and hope you are able to finish it all!

As for your age, age is just a number. I know people barely out of their teens that are more mature and responsible (and grounded and focused) than some of my friends in their late thirties/forties. The fact that you have been able to accomplish so much in so little time speaks more about your maturity and determination to succeed and be happy than any number ever could.

Happy birthday, and I hope you have a great day! GET THAT CAKE, GIRL!

  25. Kate says:

Happy Birthday, Bre! I had no idea that we were the same age :) I love your list- travelling to Europe, paying off my student loans, and collaborating more are definitely on my short list, too!

  26. Dale says:

    Atta girl. Happy birthday bre

  27. Jade Sheldon says:

Happiest of birthdays to you! I’m working on a similar list ( I turn 26 on February 3rd ). Good for you girl, already having all those student loans paid off! I just graduated from my masters program so I’m afraid I still have some years to go before they are gone. Have more patience and learn how to knit are on high on my list too…

  28. Megan says:

Happy birthday! This seems like such an awesome goal list! I’m still tweeking mine. Can’t wait to read about it.

  29. Helena says:

Thanks for your answer, Bre! You’re making me feel motivated to start paying mine off asap.
Hope you’re having an awesome day!

  30. Marta says:

Bre, I wish you nothing but the best. It looks like it’s going to be a busy and amazing year for you. I truly admire your work and how much you accomplished already! Very inspiring. Have a fantastic birthday!

I hope your birthday is wonderful!! I’m a big fan of these lists. We’ve been doing them every year since 2009, and it’s been so fun going back & reflecting on what we’ve accomplished. Good luck on getting through that list!! I’m hoping you’ll have a chance to go to Europe. We haven’t been yet, but we just live vicariously through our internet friends, haha. Best wishes!

  43. […] A man named Charles de Gaulle once said, “Nothing great will ever be achieved without great men, and men are great only if they are determined to be so.” This Saturday is my 24th birthday. Since it comes relatively soon after the New Year, I often find myself still in a state of reflection for the year past and a mode of resolution for the year ahead. In preparation for my 24th year, I want to set some goals to follow. I decided to steal this idea from my good friend (and Thought Circus designer) Bre, who recently published a fantastic post on her blog titled ’24 Before 25′. […]
