Be Free, Lance | Voice Values

I’m not sure how it happened, but I stumbled across Abby Kerr and The Voice Bureau a few weeks back and am HOOKED. There is so much strategy over there. From your brand to content and vision, it’s a great resource, hands down. So after clicking around for a bit and soaking up as much information as humanely possible, I noticed that they had a callout for their “insider stuff” in the header, which promised to help discover your voice values. Curious little me decided to sign up and take the self-assessment because let’s face it, I cannot get enough of those personality tests. I’m obsessed. Plus, why not learn more about yourself?? You never know what kind of light bulb moments will go down.

I know I’m not alone in loving on assessments like these, which is why I brought it up here today. Once finished, there are several “voices” that Abby goes over, including : security, intimacy, innovation, audacity, legacy, helpfulness, clarity, transparency, excellence, accuracy, playfulness, power, enthusiasm, love, community, and depth. Your top scoring answers will become clear and you can read ALL about them. Fun, right?? Every voice has its strengths.

And because I like to share, I thought I’d let you know what my top scoring voice was! Excellence. It surprised me, but not really. I think at first, I was worried about the negative connotations aligned with “excellence,” but then told myself that’s silly. Really, to me, it means that my work ethic is unshakable. Through focus + determination, I am willing + ready to accomplish goals. My runner up word, intimacy, on the other hand, describes the side of me that enjoys getting to know others and creating connections. Together, they explain a LOT when it comes to my business and how I work. I even learned a little more about things I should feel proud of and how to incorporate these voices even better into my daily grind. So now it’s your turn! What are your words?? Seriously though, I want to know. Share in the comments section if you’d like!

* You can find this self-assessment in the top right corner of Abby Kerr’s website. By inputting your email address, you will receive further instructions right away! Do note that I am not affiliated with this in any way, I just truly believe in how helpful it can be and wanted to share.

So interesting! I ranked the highest in “Helpfulness” and “Depth” which totally makes sense for me. The descriptors are spot on. Depth is a really interesting one… I really value the meaning, logic and tradition behind a project, and what it says to the world, not just the initial first impression. I can often be found thinking about the experience. Makes so much sense. Thanks for sharing!

    • breanna says:

That is so awesome and I love the explanation, too. Depth was more middle range for me – wish it was a bit higher. ;)

  2. hannah says:

Thanks so much for sharing this link–it really is illuminating! I often struggle with how to summarize my viewpoint and perspective in a concise way, so this is a very helpful tool. I got Clarity as my #1 value, which is almost scarily accurate!

  3. Ella says:

Thank you so much for sharing this! I am already as hooked as you are and I can’t wait to take my assessment!

  4. Joy says:

You find the coolest stuff. My top voice was Intimacy, which really didn’t surprise me. I really appreciate how she went in depth with each step and what advantages and pitfalls there were to each- it’s already making me rethink certain aspects!

    • breanna says:

Aww thank you! And intimacy twins, eh!? Cool. But yeah, I also appreciated the discussion of both advantages AND pitfalls, really makes you think …

  5. Caroline says:

Oh my gosh I LOVE personality tests and all things discovering-your-inner-voice related. I’m hopping over right now to check it out. Great find!

  6. katie says:

This is really cool! My top three are Helpfulness, Innovation, and Transparency. I definitely understand the descriptions and how they relate to me… but I for sure would have picked others for myself if I was just guessing. So that’s interesting!! Looking forward to thinking about this more…!

    • breanna says:

Right!? I probably wouldn’t have chosen my top three for myself if I was just guessing, but when the unexpected pop up AND make sense, it’s definitely worth some though. :)

  7. kylie says:

Thank you for sharing this assessment! i love these sorts of “tap into your inner self” tests! My top three values are enthusiasm, power, and love. I thought it was so strange because they seem so different from one another, but the descriptions were pretty spot-on as far as help me see up-front how I work and how I interact with others. Thank you again for sharing with us!

    • breanna says:

Glad you took it! And yeah – seems like they would be on different ends of the spectrum, but I’m sure there are connections all over the place. :)

    • Melanie says:

Kylie these three actually totally connect + make sense for me! I’ve been reading through everyone’s and getting slightly jealous of the combos that others have – ha!

This is such a strong combination because having powerful urges paired with the need to express love is (to me) the best way to have power. Then when you add enthusiasm on top of that it shows you have conviction in what you’re doing, which I think bonds the first two values even more. I just can’t help but think you’ll do amazing things in your life, both personally + on a professional level.

  8. Sarah says:

Interesting test! My top voice is Clarity. First I thought “really?” But after reading the description it become pretty obvious that it fits. Especially the part about the negative connotations hit me, because they aren’t new to me. I know that I have to work on that and this test reminded me to do so better. Runners up are Audacity, Depth, Excellence and Accuracy.

    • breanna says:

Very cool. :) And yes, weaknesses are just as important as strengths. They can work together so well when you know how to do so and try!

  9. What a great resource!! I can’t wait to take some time and really explore her website and advice. I know I have so much to learn (being new to this whole entrepreneur and business stuff). Can’t wait to take the test and find out my results – thanks for sharing!

    • breanna says:

You’re so welcome for sharing. Glad to give out another resource for entrepreneurs like yourself!!

  10. Sarah Bryn says:

Wonderful find! My top two (both 12’s!) were Intimacy & Excellence. And then there were four that I scored a 10 on (Innovation, Audacity, Transparency & Power). I can’t wait to incorporate this into my professional endeavours, and put it to work in my personal life as well!

    • breanna says:

Dude, we are so close it’s scary!! I had tops on all the ones you listed, too. Small world. ;)

  11. Casi says:

This was a fun one! I love breaking out my pen and paper for a personality quiz, makes me feel like I’m 10 years old again playing MASH. I scored top in Innovation and Helpfulness then in Transparency and Love. And that about sums me up, the good & the bad! haha

  12. Kirstin says:

I totally love this stuff! I tied for Intimacy and Helpfulness which really gave me the encouragement that I’m pursuing the right thing for me- photography. I LOVE connecting with people and I want that connection to come out in my work, thats the true motivator for me. Thanks for this series Bre, its incredibly helpful.

  13. I love the idea of this! I’m off to take part right away. Thanks for sharing :) xx

  14. Naomi says:

What a nice test! For me Intimacy and Depth were tied in first place, followed by Clarity, Helpfulness and Enthusiasm (also tied). The results were not really what I expected, but after reading the descriptions they absolutely make sense to me! I’m about to rewrite the copy on my website and this is a great source of inspiration. Thank you for sharing this Bre!

    • breanna says:

That’s how I felt, too. Wasn’t sure they were the right words when I first read them, but upon reading the descriptions, it was DEFINITELY a light bulb moment. ;)

  15. Helena says:

I LOVE this of stuff just as much as you do! My top two are the same as yours – excellence and intimacy, and enthusiasm a very close third. Totally brings out my analytical side, and makes me feel like I want to do something psychology related. ;) But really, it all comes together, and seems to just clarify/explain some points for me. Thanks for sharing, really appreciate it!!

    • breanna says:

I feel ya! Sometimes, I wonder what it would be like working a completely analytical-type job. Being creative can be stressful at times, coming up with new ideas time and time again. But we do have a good combo. ;)

  16. Melanie says:

WOW! When I was adding up the different voice values I knew exactly which ones were going to top out on my list before I even finished checking the totals! I scored 12 for both transparency + love, and then 11 on a whole bunch of other things…

It was really nice to get Abby’s perspective on how to implement those values into life + work, but what was most alarming to me is how accurate the “watch out for” sections were. I’ve definitely been burned because of my transparency before, and I currently have been feeling SUPER taken advantage of with my work because of the love value (I totally blame it on myself though for not setting up better systems before now). Live + learn though, right?

The test (oh God, how I love personality tests too!) also reaffirmed other important things for me, specifically playfulness, innovation + community. It was a lot of fun! Thanks so much for sharing this Bre : )

    • breanna says:

Glad you loved it!! Totally feel ya on being burned by transparency. It’s a tough one, but at least this is a good reminder to keep it all in check. :)

  17. Abby Kerr says:

    Breanna —

Thanks so much for featuring my Voice Values paradigm for branding on your gorgeous blog. Excellence & Intimacy together is a powerful combo, indeed. I also loved reading about your reader’s signature mix of Voice Values.

My own top mix: Excellence, Power, Depth, Clarity, & Legacy.

    • breanna says:

You are so welcome, Abby! And thank YOU for putting together such an insightful assessment. Sounds like a lot of readers were excited to take it, and I’ve been interested in reading their answers / combos as well. Funny enough, you top mix was ALMOST identical to mine. Must be the whole INFJ thing or something.

Thanks again + happy weekend. :)

  18. I always love these personality assessments you post! My top three were Intimacy, Excellence, and Power. Kind of makes me sound like a power hungry control freak, but hopefully the intimacy part balances me out. :) Before taking the quiz, I thought it was really interesting that you got Excellence and Intimacy since I remember you posting recently that you’re an INFJ. I’m an INFJ too (which makes me laugh since I got similar values as you!), and we are known as perfectionists with warm hearts, so Excellence and Intimacy make a lot of sense! :)

    • breanna says:

We had the same top three! How cool. :) Definitely must be an INFJ thing. “Perfectionists with warm hearts” couldn’t be more true. I’ve been thinking about writing something about INFJ on here sometime – maybe I’ll have to do it!

  19. Sara says:

I also love personality tests! Personality tests and worksheets, totally my jam. My top two were intimacy and power! rounded out by innovation, clarity and depth. At first I was a bit resistant to power, but re-reading it it actually describes me very well. I have a love/hate relationship with being in charge— on the one hand I’m afraid of not doing a good job and letting the people relying on me down, and on the other I love making decisions and being in control. Intimacy was an interesting one as well but mostly because it didn’t end up meaning what I thought it would. Reading about my desire for connection (which I already knew but it always helps to have someone else say it point blank doesn’t it?) inspires me even more to start a blog of my own and stop just passively reading everyone else’s!

    • breanna says:

We have very similar combos! When I read one of my top three was power, I felt really weird about it – but upon further exploration, it makes total sense. Go us. ;)

  20. Kathy says:

I LOVED this! I had four tops, all with 4’s: Helpfulness, Power, Love and Community and I thought it was spot on.

This was so amazing and wonderful to be able to link things and thoughts to!

  21. Shayla says:

Wow this was really interesting; my brand voices were so right on particularly when I think about my journey as a freelancer; I’ve experienced so many of things to “watch out for” knowing this would have been very helpful years ago!

My top scoring voice is Intimacy with a score of 12 and Helpfulness and Love tied at number two with a score of 11.

    Thanks for sharing this Breanna!

  22. Emily A. says:

You always have such great resources on your blog, aside from being a kick-butt designer! (That and me and my boys are always having dance parties to your mix tapes. lol) I was kind of surprised that my top score was Enthusiasm since I don’t think of myself as a very bubbly person when it comes to feelings, etc. but her description fit me to a T! You learn something new everyday! Now to integrate that into the way I approach my brand. Thanks again for sharing! :)

  23. Adriana M. says:

I don’t have a brand voice. I have multiple voices! I ended up with Security, Intimacy, Excellence, and Depth. I’m a little bummed out that I didn’t have one to focus on the most, but it makes my brand more intricate – a brand that strives for excellence while being intimate with their clients and provides security. Which doesn’t sound half-bad to me. I love her descriptions as well. I feel they’re very on point & really fun to read.
