Creative Diaries by Breanna Rose | Featuring Corina Nika

I’ve been following the flourishing work of Corina Nika for some time now. Her blog, Cocorrina, provides the perfect backdrop for a daily dose of beautiful photography, snippets from her life on Kefalonia Island, and a whole lot of good design. Seriously, you should go stop by. ;) For this creative diary entry, she was to focus on one single work day and answer a few simple questions about the good, the bad, and the inspiring. This is what happened, truthfully.

WHAT IS THE FIRST THING THAT YOU DID THIS MORNING Every morning, i wake up 30 minutes before i start getting ready for the day. Although it counts for less sleep, i get to start my day in an inspiring, non stressful way. No emails are allowed. Instead, i browse through Pinterest, Instagram, catch up with Twitter and quickly browse my go to blogs while having some tea and cookies on the couch.

DESCRIBE ONE CHALLENGE THAT YOU FACED Today, was one of the most difficult days, in terms of schedule. Sometimes, no matter how good your organise your schedule, things just get out of hand. My challenge was completing all the client projects as scheduled, and firing in the day some me and family time.

DESCRIBE ONE ACCOMPLISHMENT Sticking to my timer! I always calculate the amount of time i have to spend working on every project, and the amount of time i get to have a break. Although lots of times i do loose the track of time, whenever my day is as tight as today, not a second slips my hands.

DESCRIBE ONE THING YOU LEARNED To be polite. I’ve talked a lot about how being polite would make our world such a better place. It’s something that comes naturally to me, but my challenge is to be polite and show kindness even when someone doesn’t deserve it.

WHAT IS THE LAST THING YOU DID FOR WORK Today i got to work on one of my favourite rebrands ever. Always leave dessert for the end :) It’s a gorgeous mix of modern ethnic, classic, fun and natural at the same time. That project captivated me from the very beginning, since it’s so much fun playing with ethnic patterns and all.

AND JUST FOR FUN, DID YOU EAT ANYTHING TASTY Yes! I’ve turned into a passionate breakfaster through the past month. So i completely love having a royal breakfast to get me through the day. Today i had a bowl of oat, raisins, honey and fresh pomegranate.

Creative Diaries by Breanna Rose | Featuring Athena Pelton

Athena Pelton started off as a client. Then I was hers. But somewhere in between then (or almost instantly), we became friends. Athena is a photographer, stylist, and general creative powerhouse (check out her hand lettering!). I couldn’t wait to share more about her in this series and am glad she’s on board! For this creative diary entry, she was to focus on one single work day and answer a few simple questions about the good, the bad, and the inspiring. This is what happened, truthfully.

WHAT IS THE FIRST THING THAT YOU DID THIS MORNING
As soon as I woke up I headed to the basement to spend 45 minutes on the treadmill while I watched an episode of Gilmore Girls. Then I headed upstairs and crawled into the bed with the girls for some morning snuggles. We went downstairs together for breakfast – which is my favorite meal of the day right now because I’m doing the Whole 30 and I LOVE breakfast food. Oh, and coffee. Always coffee.

DESCRIBE ONE CHALLENGE THAT YOU FACED
I have a full time corporate job during the week, on top of being a freelance creative and business owner, so my husband is a stay-at-home dad. He is currently learning coding and front end web development, (whoop!!) and he uses the computer in my office/studio for his lessons. Today I had a shoot for my new website, &HELEN, and it was quite the learning curve sharing a space with each other, staying focused and on task, and watching over the womb fruits. I’m looking forward to making the switch to full time creative work, and having a spouse that is preparing to work full time from home as well, but today it became obvious that we are going to need another computer, and a bigger office.

DESCRIBE ONE ACCOMPLISHMENT
I shot images for a feature that the lovely girls of Drop It Modern are doing on my new brand, &HELEN, and drafted a new blog post. Blogging has sort of become a mundane activity for me, so it feels good to sit down and get some of it done. I also submitted a few weddings to print publications (eeeek!), and managed to teach the youngest womb fruit all the words to “Blank Space.” It’s been a banner day.

DESCRIBE ONE THING YOU LEARNED
Cutting cauliflower makes your entire house smell like a fart.

WHAT IS THE LAST THING YOU DID FOR WORK
Answered emails. I used to answer emails as soon as they came in, and sometimes, depending on the subject and/or sender, I still do, but most things I leave until the end of the day. Emptying out my inbox gives me a sense of completion, of doneness, and since I work in my home, it’s the perfect way for me to have a definitive end to the work day. Which I think is important.

AND JUST FOR FUN, DID YOU EAT ANYTHING TASTY
Since I’m doing the Whole 30 (and can’t have donuts – Wah!), I’ve been doing a lot more cooking and meal prepping. For breakfast I had fresh berries with coconut cream and cinnamon and some dried mulberries on top. Seriously so amazing.

Creative Diaries by Breanna Rose | Featuring Chelsea Fullerton

I was lucky enough to meet Chelsea Fullerton in person a few years back at Designer Vaca. She’s sweet, fun, and a talented designer & photographer to boot. Plus, her home (Chelsea, can I have your living room??) in Austin was recently featured over on The Everygirl, which is a must see. For this creative diary entry, she was to focus on one single work day and answer a few simple questions about the good, the bad, and the inspiring. This is what happened, truthfully.

WHAT IS THE FIRST THING THAT YOU DID THIS MORNING
Took my earl grey tea and oatmeal out to the studio. I have a bad habit of eating breakfast and lunch in front of the computer. I’m gonna guess I’m not the only one out there :) I also start my day with a to-do list. I like to make a short list every morning just for that day.

DESCRIBE ONE CHALLENGE THAT YOU FACED
Today I encouraged my client to letterpress print her business cards instead of digitally print the cards. Making a case for someone to spend more than triple what they would pay for digital cards can be tricky! If you’re ever in this situation, show your client physical samples of both and have a list of reasons why the paper and printing method you want is right for your client’s brand. And remember! Letterpress isn’t always the best solution. If your client’s product is relatively cheap or they hand out A LOT of cards, perhaps a well designed digital card is the best choice.

DESCRIBE ONE ACCOMPLISHMENT
I posted one new blog entry and one new portfolio project. I’m trying hard to keep a steady rhythm of new content and work on my site! It’s hard to find time for it but it’s important to get fresh work up in order to attract the clients you want.

DESCRIBE ONE THING YOU LEARNED
This month you’ll be able buy your Girl Scout cookies online! The program wants to teach Girl Scouts the importance of e-commerce and each Girl Scout will have her own web page to sell from. How cool is that? I read about this in a free daily news email I get from The Skimm. They give you important and interesting news from around the world in one funny email every morning. It’s my main source for news!

WHAT IS THE LAST THING YOU DID FOR WORK
I spent a couple hours sketching a concept for a logo design.

AND JUST FOR FUN, DID YOU EAT ANYTHING TASTY
Leftover spaghetti and raspberries for lunch!
