Creative Diaries | Kelli Murray | from Breanna Rose

I had the privilege of meeting Kelli Murray awhile back at a design retreat and can’t say enough great things about this truly sweet lady. She is a pro at beautiful illustrations and also recently helped to open up a new lifestyle goods shop, Lone Flag, with her husband. And to top it off, she balances everything while being a mother to her daughter, Rylee. For this creative diary entry, she was to focus on one single work day and answer a few simple questions about the good, the bad, and the inspiring. This is what happened, truthfully.

WHAT IS THE FIRST THING THAT YOU DID THIS MORNING : Like most mornings, I’m jolted awake by my daughter who wakes up far too early (6am). I spend the first few hours of my day spending time with her. Making us breakfast, watching cartoons, reading, coloring…..the mornings are all about her. Every Tuesday and Thursday she goes to preschool, which are my main days to tackle the bulk of my work for the week.
Today I got her dressed and ready, packed her backpack, and off we went. I grabbed a coffee on my way home and it was straight back to my computer to attend to my inbox and map out a plan for the day.

DESCRIBE ONE CHALLENGE THAT YOU FACED : The biggest challenge I’ve been facing everyday lately, is finding time for ‘me’. Finding my balance as a mom and a business owner is a constant challenge. I recently wrote a blog post about my goals for 2014, and at the top of the list was finding the time to pursue the things that are life giving to me. Learning to slow down and enjoy the present instead of always looking ahead to what is next. Taking time to breathe, to step away from my to-do lists, and focus on the things that bring me the most joy and sense of purpose. Sometimes it’s not even the things I want….but it’s the things I need. I often get so overwhelmed by the tasks at hand, that I forget to give myself, my own body and mind, the care and attention it deserves.

DESCRIBE ONE ACCOMPLISHMENT YOU ACHIEVED : I wrapped up a branding project I had been working on for a few weeks and I cooked my family a healthy meal for dinner. Cooking in general is always an accomplishment for me!

DESCRIBE ONE THING YOU LEARNED : I learned that I am much much more productive when I work away from my phone. I guess this is an obvious one, but I’ve been intentionally keeping it out of my office while I work, and it’s made a big difference in my efficiency. Social media is a part of my business….so I know I need it to some degree. But when it’s time to sit down and actually work….it’s best if I stay away from it all together. Removing myself from the distraction of instagram, emails, texts, blogs and pinterest for solid blocks of time has helped me realize how much more I can actually accomplish in a day. It’s good to get inspired….but if searching for that inspiration is taking up more time than your actual process of creating, something is wrong.

WHAT IS THE LAST THING YOU DID FOR WORK : The last thing I did for work today was some late night watercolor illustrations of dried flowers for a wedding suite I am currently working on.

AND JUST FOR FUN, DID YOU EAT ANYTHING TASTY : I’ve been trying to eat a lot healthier lately. But it’s hard for me to go a whole day without eating something sweet. I’ve always had a major sweet tooth (my dentist can attest), so limiting my sugar intake has been a challenge, to say the least. I found these amazing yogurt covered almonds that are to die for. They are my go to treat if I am craving something sweet during the day.

I am a huge fan of Kelli Murray! Her illustrations are so beautiful! I didn’t know she opened up a lifestyle goods shop! Thanks for sharing!

    • breanna says:

Right!? I wish I could do anything with watercolors, but nope. I’ll just look at others. ;) But yes, definitely check out the shop and follow their instagram account – such pretty things! A little more masculine, but still great.

  3. Kelly Brito says:

Her work is lovely, her blog is fresh, this/her feature was fun! Oh, I also love her working space!
The whole feature was great, but the “achievement” part sure made me giggle! :)

  4. Waouh, the light of this workspace is amazing, I wish my apartment had that much light going in, but I guess it’s never the case on a ground floor.
She looks like a very talented lady, and this nearly wed couple is a lucky one for having her illustrations on their wedding stationery. Will definitely go check her work a little bit deeper.

    • breanna says:

Yes yes yes – – definitely check out her work. It’s beautiful, you can definitely get lost. ;)

Another great creative diary. I really love how inspiring these are…and this really stuck with me “if searching for that inspiration is taking up more time than your actual process of creating, something is wrong.” I noticed myself starting to step away from that but it’s nice to have it articulated like that. Thanks Breanna!

I love this: “It’s good to get inspired….but if searching for that inspiration is taking up more time than your actual process of creating, something is wrong.” Definitely a problem I have a lot of the time!
And such a good point about working away from your phone. It’s hard to remember that very few things are so urgent that you need to respond to your phone / email / whatever right away.
