This past year was equally amazing as it was difficult. It was my first full year as a solo freelancer and I couldn’t be more thankful for where I’m at on this little adventure of mine. Navigating through almost 600 inquiries and a couple dozen large client projects + collaborations was all fulfilling, stressful, and eye-opening. I constantly have to pinch myself that this is my job – I feel so blessed to be doing what I love at such a young age.

Although I don’t like to reflect on hard times, I believe 100% that we can learn so much from them and move forward. Being that this was my first full year of freelancing, I worked longer days than I should have ( in our tiny apartment ) and didn’t leave much wiggle room for myself all in the name of being able to afford a sustainable life. It wasn’t until a few months ago that I felt confident enough to slow down just a bit, which has lifted a whole lot of stress. At the same time, though, I know I wouldn’t be where I am today without this past year of hard work. Part of me will always work just a little too much. With that said, I was able to make GREAT connections, raise my prices slightly ( to work less ), and collaborate with talented individuals I respect so much.

Looking forward ( 2013 & beyond ), I’ve discovered a few things about myself + my business. The theme of simplicity has crept up so much that it’s become a theme in all areas of my life. Instead of taking on too many new ideas, I want to focus. Design will always be my number one and I’ve been taking steps towards my ultimate goal : opening up a collaborative studio with a few talented designers. This is absolutely just a pretty sparkling future thought for now, but it propels me forward each and every day. With that said, I started learning to let go of some other things this year, coding + development being the biggest. Outside work, I would like to continue focusing on living a simple life … spending as much time with family / friends, travelling, and enjoying what I’ve been blessed with.

2013 is going to be a good year – I can feel it in my bones. I hope you all had a wonderful holiday and are ready to give this new year a whirl!

That is so exciting! I can only imagine how great it is to feel comfortable enough to slow down with work. I’m having to hit full speed here lately, but I love what I do so much that I’m okay with it!

I can’t wait to see what you do this year! I’m sure it’ll be nothing less than amazing. :)

I’m glad that last year was a year of growth for you as a designer and business owner. You’re an inspiration to me who is just getting her feet wet with freelancing seriously. I’m sure that with the way you’re progressing, this year will be just as good, if not better :)

I love your clean, simple yet modern new blog design. I slowed down big time last year, quitting my full-time art director job at an agency and took time off to heal my heart, travel to Europe, visit family on the East coast and freelance on my own. I think slowing down allowed me to focus on what makes me happy and to trust that when you strive for happiness and greatness, amazing things happen. I’m always inspired by your blog and look forward to your exciting opportunities and endeavors. Blessings to you in 2013!

It’s great that you’re at the stage where you can slow it down and breathe – although like you said, it’s experiencing harder times first that makes you be able to appreciate it. Good luck for 2013, it looks like you had an incredible ride for 2012, so I hope this year brings you even more happiness and success in whatever you choose to do x
